Whose job is it to Protect You?
Whose job is it to protect you? I asked a 15-year-old girl in my last self-defense clinic the same question. She said the police. I love, love, love our police and first responders. But, they are responding to an event that has already begun and damage is perhaps already done. Then she said, “well if other people are around, some of them would help”. Some of the time she would be right, but not all of the time. There is a very famous case of a woman who was heard by dozens crying for help while she was being raped and ultimately murdered. This case has been studied by psychology and sociology students for decades. The study reveals that it is human nature to assume someone else will answer the distress call. To add to this point, I was driving on the 710 freeway when I pulled over to help a man out of a burning car. While I was helping dozens, if not hundreds of cars drove by. Some were even slowing to film as they drove on.
The best you can ever do to protect yourself is to study scenarios and solutions and if possible, make the responses a matter of muscle memory. That is why I offer self-defense clinics and obstacle courses at Ignition Fitness. We learn skills that could someday save us. Out of 20 people at our last clinic, I was only able to get two to really raise their voice in a drill to dissuade a would-be attacker. Being bold takes practice, being timid is natural.
So, to answer the question whose job it is to protect you, it’s your job.
