We are all aware of the added sugars in sodas, sports drinks, baked goods and snack foods. But do you know that your salad dressing, soup, bread, pasta sauce and yogurt may contain added sugars?
Even food marketed as “healthy” may have the added sugars added to these products. Manufacturers are required to include added sugars in the ingredient list but somehow managed to camouflage the amount of sugars added to their products. Make sure to read the label carefully.
Sugars are chemicals made of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen that taste sweet. They are important energy source for our brains and bodies. Average adults consume roughly 22 teaspoons of sugars every day and not even know it. Sugars are present in foods to make them last longer, enhance flavors and make them appetizing.
One of the risks of added sugars is more rampant dental decay especially in children. Studies have shown that 40 percent of children have dental caries by the time they reach kindergarten. This can be attributed to the drinks marketed especially for children.
Consuming added sugars increases the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, heart disease ,poor dental health and obesity.
Most sugars are to blame for changes in the microbial in the digestive system, interfering with the gut health increasing inflammation and affecting our immune system.
The key to consuming less added sugars is learning how to read the food labels approved by the FDA. The public needs to recognize the health implications of consuming products with added sugars and make informed decision regarding food purchases make sure to visit your medical doctor to discuss healthy eating and living.
Brush and floss at least twice a day, visit your dental professional regularly to prevent any dental problems.
