Making Valentine’s Day Special for Seniors

by | Jan 30, 2019 | With Your Family in Mind

Valentine’s Day can be a difficult holiday for seniors who have lost a spouse or for those who have a loved one that has been diagnosed with a memory-related disease. To address potential feelings of loneliness, here are a few suggestions to encourage social interaction.
• Visit or schedule a FaceTime call with your loved one. Let them know that you are thinking of them on this special day.
• Make a homemade Valentine’s Day card for your loved one. If you have children, encourage them to create a Valentine for their grandparent or for a senior that might not have family to celebrate with.
• Surprise your loved one with an exciting excursion they can look forward to on or around Valentine’s Day. Perhaps you’ll schedule a day at the movie theater or a Sunday brunch.
• If you are a pet-lover, volunteering at a local animal shelter can lift your spirits.
• Look at your local senior center calendar and choose an event that your loved one can attend. Arrange to go with them or have a local family member or friend accompany them.
• Bake Valentine’s cookies together. Prepare sweet treats to enjoy together in honor of the holiday.
Many seniors feel isolated and lonely, not only on Valentine’s Day, but throughout the year. Consider an assisted living community for a loved one who is seeking increased social connection. Assisted living communities will often offer a comprehensive and diverse activity calendar, with a host of events and outings to choose from each week.
