Polynesian Dance is For Everyone!
What I think makes Polynesian dance the most unique and rewarding experience is not just because of the dance itself but the fact that anyone at any age can learn at any point in their life. It’s one of the few styles of dance where you see young girls, young boys, teens, grown women and men, ladies and gentlemen of a gracious age dancing and learning together. The culture itself is meant to be inclusive of all ages and genders to come together to dance and learn culture. Some members stay members their entire lives! This in turn strengthens the community and familial bonds. There aren’t many dance styles where you see a girl of five dancing on stage with her mother and brother while her father drums! We see multiple students grow up in our schools, have children, bring their children to dance and then keep dancing themselves. The culture puts a huge emphasis on the family being together and respecting one another. It’s not uncommon in Kalakeke Pacific Island Dance Company to see full families spending hours together learning dances or playing music. It keeps individual families together and gives individuals a bigger family. We dance, sing, play, eat and just live life together. We spend multiple hours during the week learning together and then we travel and perform sharing our culture and dance with the community. Sometimes we make it as far as Hawaii! Polynesian dance is not just about the dance itself, it’s about the culture and the beautiful community that is created. Its reward is the love culminated for a fellow Hula sister, brother, uncle, aunty. The beauty of a family is that it is also accepting of everyone. It’s not just for all ages and genders, but also for people of any ethnicity. As long as you have respect for the culture, a love for people, and good mana (spirit) then you are the right person to join the family!
