Something is Very Fishy
It has been shown that fish oils have a beneficial effect on your brain, both in improving cognition and memory. They may decrease depressive symptoms in a non-medicated person and help to maximize the effects of a prescription anti-depressant. Fish oils can decrease pain and inflammation, improve cardiovascular health, make blood “slippery” thereby decreasing the incidence of a clot, decrease dry macular degeneration and may decrease the growth of prostate cancer.
While it is true that fish oils, EPA and DHA, offer many health benefits, I would like to tell you about a situation that effected my husband, Michael, due to his fish oil intake. Yes, I have his permission to tell his story.
Michael went to his provider for a routine prostate blood screen. He was told his results were abnormal and that he needed to make an appointment with a physician at the City of Hope. Of course, he had himself dead and buried. What I then learned was that fish oils may falsely elevate a man’s PSA (prostate-specific antigen) which is a screening test for prostate issues, including cancer.
Yes, his fish oils with ALL their benefits made his PSA level falsely high. We had him stop his fish oils for a week, redrew his blood, and his results returned to within normal levels. Michael was ecstatic with the good “news” and I am now hoping to spread the word about stopping fish oils prior to a PSA blood test, or if your result comes back abnormal, take a fish oil break and repeat the test in a week. Men and the women who love them may be thrilled with the results.
