Truck Accidents are Causing Havoc on the 5 Freeway
With all the construction going on the 5 Freeway, we are seeing more and more truck related accidents. Unfortunately, when an 80,000 pound 18-wheeler gets into an accident with a 5,000 pound passenger vehicle, the results are not pretty, and passenger car loses.
But, what is causing these truck accidents?
1. Driving too fast – an eighteen-wheeler needs about 40 percent more time than a passenger vehicle to stop. This estimate could vary depending on the load weight, weather and road conditions. So, be mindful of trucks that are traveling fast.
2. Driving too close – a truck driver may drive too close and when a vehicle in front stops, the truck may not have enough distance to stop.
3. Driver error – because of the height of trucks, the driver may not see a passenger vehicle in his blind spot. So, be mindful of and stay away from trucks’ blind spots.
4. Driver fatigue – pursuant to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, truck drivers must keep logs, showing their hours of operation (driving) and their off-duty hours. When a driver fails to adhere to these rules, fatigue may set in, making him a dangerous driver.
5. Driver aggression – truck drivers are on strict time schedules, especially when they are delivering perishable goods. If a driver is running late, he tends to become more aggressive.
6. Driver distraction – a truck driver can get distracted by using a cell phone, by conversing with his passenger or by being preoccupied with the radio. These distractions can make him a danger on the road. So, if you see a truck driver on the phone, stay away.
