Do I Need a Lawyer?
Ever wonder: “Do I need a lawyer, or can I handle my injury case on my own?” To quote Abraham Lincoln: “He who represents himself has a fool for a client.” Think about it: you wake up one morning with a nasty toothache. You can either yank that tooth out with pliers or call a dentist. What do you choose?
If your case involves an accident and the insurance company accepts liability, you get one adjuster who handles your property damage, and another adjuster who handles your bodily injuries. The property damage adjuster will not fight and will either have your car fixed or paid for (if totaled).
Unfortunately, this creates a false sense of security because people believe that the bodily injury adjuster will also pay for their medical bills, lost income and out-of-pocket expenses. So, they give a statement to the adjuster and sign all the forms they are given.
Reality sets in during negotiations – the bodily injury adjuster is not on their side. He/she claims that the injuries are minor and the party over-treated. He/she offers money far below what was expected – it doesn’t even pay for the bills.
Now what? Were all necessary steps taken to maximize recovery? Was something disclosed to the adjuster that should not have been? What is the fair value of the case?
Injury attorneys take cases on contingency – we only get paid if there is a settlement or judgment. If there is no recovery, then we do not charge a fee. So, if you are not paying, why wouldn’t you use an experienced attorney? The question is: how can you afford not to hire a lawyer? It is vital that you hire an attorney immediately. The longer you wait, the more harm you cause yourself.
