Logic or Emotion
From childhood our decisions are judged. Though we start off curious and confident, these judgments lead us to question our ability to make decisions. The result is many choose to step back and allow others to make their decisions. Those who choose to make their own decisions often choose based on the extremes of logic or emotion. Logical decision-making focuses only on what is “right” and “functional” (according to their definition), not how they impact people. Emotional decision-making focuses only on emotional impacts, not functionality.
Extremists tend to be impulsive and reactive in their choices without considering consequences. Extremes are balanced by the opposite extreme, resulting in each cancelling the other out. More progress has been made by our country when moderates were in control than extremists. I remember the beginning of the women’s movement, where women wanted to be the best men they could be. They dressed like men and acted like men in order to break the glass ceiling, minimizing their innate qualities. Our society nurtures different qualities in males and females. A blending of these different qualities gives us the greatest outcome, leading to greatest stability and growth. It builds self-confidence and productivity.
Do we need to choose or promote one or the other? Considering impact and outcome in our decision-making leads to people feeling valued, connected and accepted as part of the whole. All would gain if we promoted balance in our family-life and work-life. Lead by example; let others see the result when you show a consideration for functionality and impact. We’re more likely to incorporate a new approach when we see it modeled along with the results of that approach. When I teach communication skills, people both feel and see the differences. Show people what works.
You have the ability to promote positive growth by nurturing a balanced approach when interacting with others. Be supportive rather than judgmental when people make decisions. Facilitate their exploration and discovery and help them become aware of potential consequences to possible decisions. Help them see the impact their decisions may have on them, others and their long-term objectives.
