Choosing Your Tax Preparer
The percentage of taxpayers using a professional tax preparer has risen to over fifty percent according to the IRS. This is with good reason because the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act made several changes to the tax code when it went into effect.
Choosing the Most Qualified Preparer
CPAs: CPAs are qualified to prepare taxes so long as they meet their annual continuing education requirements. Not all CPAs, however, focus on tax preparation. So, only choose one who does.
Enrolled Agents: These practitioners are federally licensed. To maintain their certification, they must complete 72 hours of continuing education every three years. Enrolled agents can represent taxpayers before the IRS.
Tax Attorneys: Usually, tax attorneys charge higher fees. If you have a tax dispute with the IRS or a complex situation with an audit, however, you may need one.
Some considerations
Most taxpayers are best served by preparers who are available year-round. Taxpayers frequently receive requests for additional information after tax season that may require professional advice.
Year-round availability enables you to receive tax planning anytime. Planning may save you thousands of dollars on future taxes. Our clients should note we provide unlimited tax planning advice at no cost throughout the year.
Make sure your potential preparer provides a clear price structure. Prices commonly vary depending on the complexity of the return. Be cautious of preparers who do not discuss pricing up front.
Not every tax preparer is adept at dealing with all tax issues. If you need to file a Schedule C or E, represent a non-profit, have a fiduciary return, or have a pass-through business, you need a preparer with that expertise.
