“Hay” There! Allergies and It’s effects on our mouths
Spring’s approach marks the yearly onset of hay fever and other allergies. It is the perfect time to go for walks in the parks and smell the blossoming flowers. However, it is also the start of seasonal allergies. Spring, summer and fall tend to be the worst times of the year for allergies due to sensitivity to pollen, grasses, weeds or airborne spores. Some people experience allergy all year round and some may have it occasionally.
The symptoms are all too familiar: runny nose, itchy and watery eyes, itchy skin, sneezing, dry mouth as most people sleep with their mouths open to breathe, wheezing or difficulty swallowing and fatigue due to poor quality sleep as a result of a stuffy nose.
There are different ways of managing allergies. First is to reduce exposure. Try to stay indoors as much as possible preferably where it is air conditioned. Keep windows closed
when you sleep, roll up windows when driving. Seek medical help and treatment. Just keep in mind, when we take allergy medications, it has some reported side effects. Almost always, antihistamines are prescribed by healthcare professionals which causes dry mouth. Dry mouth is not only uncomfortable -it also increases your chances of developing
cavities, gum disease and halitosis (bad breath).
Make sure to sip water throughout the day to keep your mouth moist or chew sugar free gum to increase saliva production.
Consult your dental professionals for any advice on what type of mouth rinse can help to reduce dry mouth. Visit your dental office for any concerns about gum disease and tooth decay to prevent further damage.
