Laughing with Di – October 2020
One definition of “vote” is: a visual formal expression of opinion or will in response to a proposed decision as an indication of approval or disapproval. (Source: Merriam Websters Collegiate Dictionary, 10th Edition, 1993. Does anyone else have one of these besides me?)
Let’s have a laugh.
When we were children, we had simple ways to choose, “eeny, meeny, miney, moe”, rock-paper-scissors or flipping a coin. In our lifetimes we have voted yea or nay, drawn the short straw, raised our hands in favor, put names in a jar. What could be hard about voting?
You can be voted off the island, big brother says goodbye, no rose for you, blimey, baking is not your forte. Cheerio and off you go. Fail at miniature golf and you don’t make par. Vault, dodge, tumble and dive right off a reality show. Have a novelty act, sing, dance, do stand-up comedy or magic – you need four votes to make it. Are you strong enough? Agile enough? Clever enough? A warrior? A titan? You’re fired.
Are you an entrepreneur, a fashion designer, a tattoo artist, an old cook, a young cook, a toy blocks constructor, a solver of puzzles? Voting goes on around us constantly. You can brave through a blind date, tell or not tell the truth, tape the funniest video, judge a beauty contest.
You could be a shareholder, member of an HOA, belong to a club and you will probably be electing officers, adopting changes or voting on new rules. We have learned about audience participation, parliamentary procedure, unanimous consent. Family interaction may involve voting for what movie to watch, when to go on vacation, what to eat, a sports event, what to stream, who gets the remote?
See how easy it is? See how we have been brought up doing it? See how it happens all around us all the time? Now, go out there and please VOTE in November! You’re a pro!
