Preparing to Sell Your Home
When it comes to selling your home, much of the success lies in adequate preparation. That means choosing the right real estate team and working out things like prices and the finer details, but it also means taking the time to ensure that your home is looking its best right off the bat. You’ll want to ensure that potential buyers can get a good feel of what the house has to offer them while still allowing for them to visualize themselves in the space – everything is about first impressions!
You’ll first want to depersonalize the property as much as possible. Items that are revealing of your family’s personal lives (think family photos and anything with your last name on it) can deter potential buyers; seeing photos of your family mounted on the wall or over the fireplace can make it difficult for them to see themselves actually living in the home. Make sure to remove any photos, personal items, and noticeably unique items that could take away from the “open space” appeal of the house.
While you’re at it, make note of and try to handle any minor repairs you encounter as you go through the house. Re-caulking counters, repainting any “shocking” rooms and other small adjustments can make all the difference when showing off your home to potential buyers.
Take steps to tidy up the space, too – clean counters and shiny mirrors can go a long way in drawing a buyer’s attention. Additionally, decluttering your home will allow for it to look a lot more spacious and organized, which helps give buyers the chance to imagine themselves in the house. Removing items from the floor, cleaning out shelves and closets and thoughtful organization can do a lot to help make your house that much more appealing.
On that note, you’ll need to spend some time focusing on curb appeal, too. Whether you handle it yourself or decide to spring for professionals, take some time to ensure that the exterior of your home is as endearing as the interior is. Mow the lawn, plant some flowers, and fix up any exterior damage so you’re set when it comes time to show the property.
In the end, it’s all about drawing in your audience – in this case, potential buyers. The easier it is for them to picture themselves in your home, the greater your chance of making a sale!
