Staying Hopeful for 2021 – Chancellor Dr. Dianne Van Hook
2020 has been a very challenging year, but without challenges how would we as human beings grow. We are so lucky to be in the Santa Clarita Valley because our community always bands together in times of great stress. Families and friends are going through a lot at the moment but in the true fashion of our community we are all trying to support each other through these very unprecedented times. We sat down with Dr. Dianne Van Hook the Chancellor of College of the Canyons to shed some light on what the community can look forward to in the New Year. With the pandemic, College of the Canyons had to shift their usual program to accommodate for more learning at home. “COC is a learning institution that help people to complete their goals, people can engage design and build their own future by every step that they take and I am optimistic we are learning, collaborating, engaging and growing during these times,” commented Dr. Van Hook. Although some might feel the online learning as a “have to” students are still being innovative and pushing their limits. “We are looking at the shift as a ‘have to’ but look at it as a new structure that you design, as far as what we experienced, we have seen an immense amount of creativity not just from staff but in students, every day I get emails to talk about things they have discovered,” she continued. With the online structure College of the Canyons are working on meeting people’s educational needs. “We are pursuing more disciplines and provide workforce training certificates for jobs that are emerging and have emerged: cyber security, allied health, manufacturing and more,” Dr. Van Hook added. During this time Dr. Van Hook encourages the community to stay hopeful and to remember, “ the future will hold enthusiasm for what we have learned from these unprecedented times.
