Name Your Own Car Insurance Price and Only Pay for What You Need Good Idea or Bad?
Before I started litigating injury cases 23 years ago, the answer would have been obvious – great idea! Now, after handling thousands of accident cases – clearly a horrible idea!
Every insurance company allows you to choose your coverage options. The more you choose, the higher your premium. When using “name your own price” or “only pay for what you need,” the consumer focuses only on the price, not the coverage and why each coverage is important.
Under the law, the only coverage you “need” is $15,000 in liability, which pays the other driver if you are at fault for the accident. In reality, you may end up “needing” more.
Several additional coverage options are available which will protect YOUR interests if you are injured and the at-fault party has minimal or NO coverage. These include Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist and MedPay.
Looking at a real case may help: We recently handled a major accident case in which our client was not at fault and needed surgery. Unfortunately, the at-fault party had only $15,000 in insurance coverage and our client had only $30,000 in Underinsured coverage and no MedPay. This means the maximum our client could recover, through insurance, was $30,000.
Increasing the Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage from $30,000 to $100,000 would have cost a little more, but it would have protected our client under these circumstances, and he would have been able to collect up to $100,000. Same with MedPay – it is not expensive, but pays for YOUR injuries, especially when the at-fault party may not have sufficient coverage.
My advice – Speak with a real insurance agent and find out what coverages you need to protect yourself, before it’s too late.”
