How Does Pregnancy Affect My Oral Health?
We, at May Conte DDS, would like to congratulate you on your upcoming bundle of joy. Chances are that you’ll experience many changes during your pregnancy & your oral health is no exception.
Here are some ways pregnancy can impact your smile:
Pregnancy Gingivitis: Hormonal changes during pregnancy can impact your oral health. Pregnancy gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums resulting in swelling, bleeding, & tenderness.
Increased Risk of Tooth Decay: Pregnancy can increase the risk of developing tooth decay & cavities due to changes in behaviors, such as constant snacking, grazing, or craving sugary treats. Rinse your mouth thoroughly after consuming sweet treats & choose a healthy alternative such as fresh fruits or raw vegetables.
Tooth Erosion: Morning sickness & constant vomiting expose your teeth to stomach acids, which can lead to tooth enamel erosion, sensitivity, & decay. Rinse your mouth first with water or fluoride mouthwash to keep your acid levels under control.
Dry Mouth: Pregnancy dry mouth is a common concern that increases the risk of developing problems, including tooth decay, gum disease, & infections. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Sugarless gum can also help enhance saliva production to keep your mouth moist.
Pregnancy Tumors: Expectant moms often develop red, mulberry-like bumps along the gumline & between the teeth called pregnancy tumors. These growths are harmless & usually resolve on their own after pregnancy.
How Does Your Oral Health Impact Your Developing Baby?
Keeping your mouth healthy can directly impact your baby’s oral & overall health. Gum disease during pregnancy can result in premature delivery & low birth weights, which puts your baby at risk of developing a range of health problems. Moreover, cavity-causing bacteria can transfer from a mom’s mouth to the baby’s mouth, potentially leading to early childhood cavities & requiring extensive dental care at a very young age. Maintaining your oral health during your pregnancy will get your child on track to a healthy smile right from the start!
We, at May Conte DDS, recommend that you schedule your routine dental exam and cleaning and to have any preventive or restorative dental procedures completed before getting pregnant. We are here to support your oral health before, during, & after your pregnancy! We are here for you every step of the way. Call us and schedule your appointment today!
