Orthopedic Conditions
Many orthopedic conditions affect pets, and most can be fixed in one or more ways. It might be a simple fracture that requires internal or external fixation. The same is true of conditions affecting the joints, where damage to the cartilage may lead to osteoarthritis and the inability to walk properly or to exercise. ACL damage and repair in the dog is a common problem, and many repair methods exist. For this reason, early detection of damaged ligaments, and other structures inside the joints, such as the menisci in the knee are essential to a quick repair and return to function.
Fortunately, newer, less invasive procedures are available to fix these problems. One method involves using arthroscopy to view and repair structures inside joints without having to make large incisions, allowing for a better repair and quicker recovery. Newer materials are also being used to provide ligament replacement techniques, which help stabilize joints. Prosthetic devices such as hip, knee and elbow replacements are being used in pets.
Diagnostic equipment to help identify some of these problems involve radiography (x-rays), ultrasound, CT scans, MRI’s, nuclear scans, etc. All of these options are available and specialized facilities exist close by for referral, although x-rays can be done at most clinics.
Birds, reptiles, and other species also suffer from orthopedic conditions, and treatments are available to help them as well. We are dedicated to providing the latest in veterinary medical and surgical techniques and care with the purpose of keeping pets healthy.
