Why Do You Want to Workout?
Not a silly question, if you want lasting results. It is also one of the first questions I ask of every potential personal training client I meet. Without a strong “Why”, the thing that gets you to the gym on days you’d just rather be a couch potato, procrastination will win. Your “Why” has to be greater than any potential excuse.
The first answers to “Why” that come to mind for most people (to lose weight, to get healthy, etc.) are usually NOT the real reasons people workout. Dig deep, it should be personal. Keep asking why until you can go no further. Why do you want to lose weight? Why do you want to be healthier? Why do you want more energy?
Once you determine the true reason for getting into better shape, nothing will stop you from achieving your goal. You will be able to resist that donut or glass of wine. You will be able to drag yourself to the gym on days you just don’t feel you have the energy, knowing, when you leave the gym, you’ll feel so much better than when you first arrived. You will be able to plan your cheat days, avoid instant gratification, and temptation, confident that the end result will be so much more gratifying.
It is only after the true reason a person wants to train is determined, that the process of de-signing the proper program can begin. To do that, you must assess your current health, fitness, nutrition, sleep habits, medications and more. There is no one size fits all program, which is why a professional trainer is so beneficial to achieving your goals. Just because you see some-one else do something at the gym, doesn’t mean it’s right for you.
Most people do the exercises that are easy, fun, or come naturally. Unfortunately, if it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you. Workouts are “work”, which is another reason knowing your “Why” is so important. The real pleasure derived from training comes away from the gym.
There are 168 hours in every week. Most people workout 2 or 3 days a week and, for each hour they are at the gym, they usually only exercise 20-30 minutes. It is a very small price to pay for a longer, happier, healthier, more fulfilling life.
So dig deep and determine your “Why”. You’ll be glad you did.
