Me-Ouch! Pain Medications for Cats
I spend a lot of time talking about osteoarthritis and pain control in our older dogs. Cats, however, often get the short end of the stick. Older cats can definitely get osteoarthritis, but they are so good at hiding their symptoms we often forget to consider if they are in pain. There are some exciting break thrus in pain control for our kitties.
The first are the non-steroidal antiinflammatory medications (NSAIDs). These medications help with both pain and inflammation. We tend to use NSAIDs in small doses in cats compared to dogs. Routine monitoring bloodwork is needed because some cats are sensitive to NSAIDs and will develop liver or kidney problems.
There are other pain medications we can use alone or in combination. Gabapentin is a neuropathic pain medication that is used in cats for fear-based aggression or pain. Buprenorphine is a pain medication that is derived from opium. It can cause sedation in some cats. Glucosamine supplements are joint supplements that help support the joints as they age. They often contain chondroitin, MSM and other additives that help reduce inflammation.
The newest and most exciting pain medication for cats is an injectable called Solensia. It is an antibody that targets nerve growth factor, which causes pain progression in osteoarthritis. It is given by your veterinarian once a month. This is revolutionary because now you don’t have to try to pill your cat or mix medications with food.
We have options to help these creeky, arthritic cats feel more comfortable. Just don’t be surprised if your older cat is jumping up on cabinets and countertops once again!
