Body Lift Surgeries Are Becoming More Popular – Paul Tran, MD, FACS
Recent data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons shows body lift surgeries are the fastest growing procedure performed by its member surgeons. Buttock lifts, lower body lifts and upper arm lifts were the fastest growing procedures last year. Breast augmentation continues to be the most popular surgical procedure performed, with Botox/Dysport and fillers the most common nonsurgical procedure. Buttock lifts and body lifts involve surgery to lift and remove excess sagging skin in the buttocks, back, hips and pelvic region. The sagging skin develops from aging or massive weight loss from dieting or gastric bypass. The patient’s own tissue can be used to help augment the deflated buttock tissues and improve its shape.
The growing popularity of social media personalities seems to parallel an increase in buttock augmentation. Augmentation can be done with either silicone implants or use of the patient’s own fat cells. Also known as the “Brazilian Butt Lift,” the surgery involves large volume liposuction from the body and injection of the removed fat into the buttock and buttock muscles.
Augmentation with your own fat has the advantage of avoiding an implant and risks of infection. Buttock implants are at risk of migration and malposition. However, there can be other complications from fat injections, such as fat embolism, that the patient should be aware of. The best option depends on each patient and their goals.
