The Power of Optimism
You enter a room with a group of people and feel positive energy. The energy invigorates you, causing a virtuous reaction. You think the abundance emanates from the leader. I have felt this, as I’m sure you have too. Conversely, you enter a room with a group of people and feel negative energy. In this case, the energy debilitates you, causing a guarded reaction. You think the scarcity is emitting from the leader. Optimism is present in the first scenario, and pessimism in the second.
Leaders far too often project pessimism and scarcity as motivators believing it will cause followers to act. This notional room may be in your home, workplace, city hall, or even the state or nation’s capitols. Candidates for public office are notorious for casting doom and gloom, hoping to secure your vote by painting their opponents as catalysts for societal, economic, or national security downfall. Corporate leaders spend much time discussing what’s wrong instead of right and fail to provide their teams and stakeholders with an optimistic vision for the future.
In today’s rapidly changing world, public and corporate leaders must be forward-thinking and visionary with an abundant mindset. They rally their teams around a shared purpose and create a culture of collaboration, innovation, and success. Leadership is not just about holding a title or occupying a high office; it’s about inspiring others and driving virtuous change. This requires a focus on what is possible, not what is impossible.
At the heart of exceptional leadership lies an abundant mindset projecting a positive, optimistic outlook that motivates individuals and organizations to achieve great things. An optimistic leader sees challenges as opportunities and is not deterred by obstacles. By focusing on what can be accomplished, leaders create a positive, energetic workplace culture of collaboration that drives virtuous change in their organizations and communities. Exceptional leaders project optimism and accountability: “we will achieve this goal, and here is my plan to get it done!”
Failed leaders project pessimism: “we can’t achieve this goal, and your plan will never work!” Leaders who adopt a pessimistic, scarcity-minded approach risk dampening the spirits of those around them. This type of leadership is often characterized by dire messaging, blaming others for the conditions, lacking any solution that would lead to a positive outcome, and avoiding accountability. Nothing is enduring about projecting pessimism, and we must reject this attitude that often plagues these types of leaders and seek those who embrace an optimistic and collaborative paradigm.
So, to all leaders in public office and CEOs in the corporate world, I challenge you to be an optimist. Be a leader who inspires and motivates others to greatness. Remember that your values, words, and actions can shape the future and that your attitude sets the tone for a thriving organization. There is absolute power in optimism and complete impotence in pessimism. What type of leader do you want to be, an optimist or pessimist?
