Path to Harmony
We all desire to live life with ease, free from pain and drama. According to the best-selling book “The Four Agreements,” the key to such harmony lies in getting along with others through healthy communication. However, good communication must begin with the way we communicate with ourselves, as our thoughts manifest into reality. Do we engage in a healthy, positive dialogue with ourselves, using affirmations, or do we judge ourselves, feeling ashamed and guilty for our mistakes? Don Miguel Ruiz addresses precisely this issue in his book, drawing upon age-old wisdom and the spiritual beliefs held by the ancient Toltec people. By practicing the following four agreements—with ourselves, others, God, and life itself—we can enhance our communication with ourselves and others, and live a harmonious life.
The first agreement is to be impeccable with our words, both those we tell ourselves and those we hear from others. Do we believe a false narrative in our minds, engaging in self-limiting talk full of judgment that leads to guilt and shame? It is crucial to eliminate poisonous words that emotionally destroy us and keep us scarred and stagnant for years. Speaking with integrity and using positive affirmations can work wonders, creating a reality of love, peace, and genuine joy.
The second agreement is to not take anything personally. Allowing other people’s opinions and comments to penetrate our mindset and affect our emotions gives them too much power. Their words and actions towards us do not necessarily reflect the truth; they reveal more about them than about us. Remember that we are not responsible for other people’s words or actions, but we are responsible for our reactions to them. Happiness is a choice, as is suffering.
The third agreement is to avoid making assumptions. Often, due to poor communication, we hastily jump to conclusions without confirming or verifying the truth, leading to more misunderstandings. When our expectations of others are not met, or when others have different thoughts or feelings than us, we feel hurt. Instead of assuming, it is crucial to always ask questions to ensure clear communication.
The fourth agreement is to always do our best. We must practice the first three agreements daily, cultivate a strong sense of self, and strive to reach our full potential. Shifting our thinking and implementing these challenging tips may take a lifetime. For instance, we should forgive others not because they deserve it, but because doing so frees us. Similarly, we do our best not out of obligation or the expectation of rewards, but because we genuinely feel love and kindness towards ourselves and others. By being respectful, forgiving, and compassionate to ourselves, we can live a life free from shame and guilt, free from pain, and experience personal freedom in all aspects of life. As Don Miguel Ruiz said, “Every human is an artist. The dream of your life is to create beautiful art.” Let us all agree to pursue that dream.
