Toastmasters – Local “Outliers” Chapter Invites Guests and New Members The Alchemy of Communications
Experimentation is how we find out what we are capable of and new methods we can apply. The outcome is skills we can then add to our abilities, perform confidently, and improve our lives.
In the 13th to 18th centuries so-called “alchemists” challenged the base of knowledge at the time and made remarkable discoveries. They boldly altered the current base of knowledge by discovering new substances – hydrochloric and nitric mineral acids, sodium carbonate, potash, alcohol. They isolated and identified what are now known as basic elements, such as arsenic, antimony, and bismuth. The alchemists eventually gave up on the infamous initial goal of trying to make gold from lead, but not before inventing and developing laboratory devices and procedures that we now use in modern pharmacology and chemistry. Their discoveries, that ultimately cured diseases and prolonged life, were seen as “magical” then, yet today we expect such advancements. Alchemists/scientists are now encouraged to study the mystery of substances, seek to uncover the uniqueness of each one, and experiment with how they can be reproduced and combined.
In the 20th century, key to humankind’s progress was our developments in electronic networking and transmitting our messages. From drawing pictures on cave walls many centuries ago, humans now connect and communicate by sending and receiving signals through the expanse of outer space. We listen for messages from afar. Today’s brief electronic text messages, and notifications by the sound of a mere “ping”, oddly seem to be somewhat of a return to yesterday’s cryptic caveman drawings. With humankind’s role in exploring the Universe we now seek even more to be succinct and easily understood. We are working on sending messages to far-away places like Pluto, a planet that takes 248 years to make its trip through our solar system to circle the Sun just one time.
Building our expertise in communicating clearly is crucial to understanding and expanding our position in the Universe. To experiment with and build your communications expertise, Toastmasters offers educational resources, and our local chapter offers the safe social meeting environment for everyone to observe and build their communication skills, no matter their level of experience or confidence. Mentoring is available. Join us as a guest to Zoom in or attend a Toastmasters meeting.
