Novel Treatments for Arthritis in the Cat and Dog – Copper Hill Animal Clinic
As our beloved pets live longer and healthier lives we continue to make efforts to push the boundaries of longevity. Not only do we want our pets to live a long time, but also have a good quality of life. In some pets, problems with mobility become life threatening when it hurts to go on a walk. Historically, a substantial arsenal of pain control medications, physical therapy and diet support have been available to support these pets. However, in the past year a new biologic treatment has become available in the form of monoclonal antibodies. These therapies are exciting, as they appear to be an effective treatment with little to no side effects.
Monoclonal antibodies are similar to a pet’s own antibodies. These biologic medications are specific to the species, so the cat product is only for cats and the dog product is only for dogs. The antibodies seek out circulating nerve growth factor, which is a substance in the body associated with chronic pain. The antibody removes the nerve growth factor from circulation, usually resulting in decreased arthritis pain. Since arthritis pain can lead to decreased quality of life, it is a serious concern. Managing arthritis pain well can lengthen and improve quality of life, leading to more time with our fuzzy friends. We have seen remarkable improvements in our kitty friends with this therapy and we anticipate release of the dog specific medication in autumn. Currently we are forming a list of clients who want to use it as soon as it becomes available.
