Communicating Our Data A Cosmic Perspective
We humans have a cosmic ability. We gather facts; we analyze them; we search for the perspectives that will help us resolve our challenges. What we learn becomes the data we then use to source solutions for the best outcomes on our expedition through life.
Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, in his book Starry Messenger, describes our modern space age transformation, moving from “provincial interpretations of the world” to experiencing the “overview effect”. He is referring to the overwhelming sensations reported by every space traveler as they have orbited Earth. Their perspective is altered dramatically as they take in the beauty of our blue planet. Surrounded by the black depth of space, their overall viewpoint takes a huge leap of understanding. Hugh Ross, in his book, Why the Universe Is The Way It Is, describes how extraordinarily fine-tuned the Universe is for life to exist on Earth. When viewing Earth from this perspective our different cultures, historical events, and political viewpoints fade in importance.
Early in his book, on page two, Tyson clarifies that we “are not in search of each other’s opinions”. Rather we “are in search of each other’s data.” The realization is that we all have the same goals to thrive in “our place in the Universe”. What’s crucial to mankind’s endurance is interpreting and sharing the data we discover. Many of us are in the position of speaking to represent, whether it’s our company, our organization, our product, or our solutions. Illustrating with our company’s goals and accomplishments, we inform, uplift, and inspire our audience with…wait for it…our data.
From its inception in the 1920’s, it is this level of communication that drives the Toastmasters organization to provide the platform for practicing both our planned and our impromptu speaking skills. With the objective of sharing our data, our meetings assure our mission to celebrate our communication expertise.
Our local chapter is called the Outliers. Our meetings offer the friendly support of a group setting to practice what we learn individually in reading brief lessons on-line that build our speaking skills. We meet via Zoom 6:30pm to 8:00pm the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month, with quarterly hybrid meetings. Mentoring is available. To attend a meeting as our guest, contact our founder and VP of Education Accredited Speaker (AS) Tom Iland on 661-313-3323 or tom@thomasiland.com.
