Choosing Your Tax Preparer – Professional Tax Services
Many people claim to be tax preparers. What you need to determine is whether a prospective preparer possesses the education and experience to deliver an accurate return that will limit your tax liability without violating any laws or raising a red flag for an audit. Furthermore, you should consider whether you might benefit from a professional who will be available year-round should you have tax questions.
Which Category of Preparers Should You Choose?
CPAs: CPAs are licensed by the California Board of Accountancy and are trained to handle complex returns. CPAs can represent you before the IRS.
Enrolled Agents: Enrolled agents are licensed by the IRS, are subject to a suitability check, and need to pass a Special Enrollment Exam. They must complete 72 hours of continuing education every three years. Enrolled agents can represent taxpayers before the IRS.
Tax Attorneys: Usually, tax attorneys charge the highest fees. Those who have a tax dispute with the IRS or a complex situation with an audit might consider choosing an attorney.
Tax Preparers: These include non-licensed professionals who are subject to minimal regulation but must take continuing education classes. Tax preparers usually handle simple returns and charge less. Should you consider working with a tax preparer, one whose work is supervised by a CPA or an enrolled agent is usually the better choice.
Considerations to Keep in Mind
Most taxpayers are best served by preparers who are available year-round, as they can also provide tax planning. (Our practice provides clients with complimentary unlimited tax-planning advice throughout the year.) In addition:
• Check with the Better Business Bureau on their reputation, as well as online reviews, to make sure they are known to rarely make mistakes, which typically delay processing.
• Confirm the preparer is in good standing and licensure is up-to-date.
• Thoroughly explain your situation and get a quote.
• Ensure the preparer is up-to-date with the latest technology related to tax preparation. This includes electronic filing, which enhances accuracy and speeds tax refunds.
