May the Cure Be with You – American Cancer Society Relay For Life® of Santa Clarita Valley

by | Mar 29, 2024 | Community

In 1999, the American Cancer Society Relay For Life® of Santa Clarita Valley held its inaugural Relay with the unforgettable and inspiring Heather Warrick as SCV ACS council president. Relay For Life of Santa Clarita Valley has since raised more than $8.6 million to support cancer research and provide services for local patients and their families, including free rides to treatment appointments, lodging when treatment is delivered far from home, and a live 24/7 cancer helpline.
More than just a fundraising walk, Relay For Life is a free, family-friendly festival that brings together passionate supporters who embody the American Cancer Society’s vision to end cancer as we know it, for everyone.
On Saturday, May the Fourth, with the theme of “May the Cure Be with You,” the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Santa Clarita Valley invites the community to its 26th annual event at Central Park—27150 Bouquet Canyon Road, Santa Clarita, CA 91350, from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. White armored stormtroopers will entertain the crowd with Star Wars costumes and photo ops, and team tents decorated in Disney and Star Wars themes will fill the event area.
Opening ceremonies begin at 9 a.m. with remarks by a UCLA Health physician. The Survivor Lap follows, honoring cancer survivors and their caregivers as they walk the first lap to a standing ovation from their community. Survivors enjoy a dedicated survivor tent where they can relax with complimentary snacks, and receive a special survivor swag bag. Survivors are encouraged to register in advance at wwwSCVRelay.org.
Live entertainment will be provided throughout the day by Valencia High Drum Line, the Saugus High Jazz Band and Choir, Shooting Stars Dance, and New World Dance; other performers include Doc Rogers, Band Lexington, Vinyl Gypsies, and Electric Vinyl. Guests can also enjoy games, contests, vendors, raffle drawings, food trucks, as well as walk laps around the track to symbolize the ongoing fight against cancer.
At 7:30 p.m., the inspirational Luminaria Ceremony takes place. Participants carry lights and walk the track in silence amid decorated, illuminated bags, each dedicated to honoring a survivor or memorializing a lost loved one. Visit www.SCVRelay.org and click “Luminaria” to dedicate a bag in honor of someone you know that has been diagnosed with cancer and a team of volunteers will decorate it on your behalf. The deadline to request a luminaria bag online is April 25th at 5pm. If you prefer to decorate the bag yourself, contact Yvonne at Luminaria@SCVRelay.org, or join us at the Luminaria Booth at the event on May 4th.
Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature fundraising event to support breakthrough research, treatment, and programs. The ACS is the largest non-governmental funder of cancer research and is led by courageous volunteers who believe the world can be free from cancer. Our local ACS chapter couldn’t achieve its goals without the support of dedicated, passionate volunteers and sponsors like UCLA Health, Keck Medicine of USC, and Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital.
Get involved with the Relay For Life movement today by donating, joining a team, or starting one of your own! Encourage friends, family, coworkers, and cancer survivors to register with you at SCVRelay.org and follow us on social media at www.Facebook.com/SCVRelay. You can be part of a community that gives hope and support to those facing cancer.
