Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) Scams and Seniors Comfort Keepers In-Home Care
AI scams targeting seniors have become a concerning issue in recent years. These scams often exploit the trust and lack of familiarity older adults may have with technology. Here are some common tactics and ways to protect against them:
1. Robocalls and Phishing: AI-driven robocalls can impersonate trusted entities like banks or government agencies, tricking seniors into providing sensitive information. Advise seniors to hang up on unsolicited calls and verify through official channels if necessary.
2. Fake Tech Support: Scammers use AI to simulate tech support interactions, claiming viruses or issues on the senior’s computer. Educate seniors to only seek tech support from reputable sources and to never grant remote access to their devices unless certain of the legitimacy.
3. Social Engineering: AI can analyze publicly available data to create convincing fake personas or to tailor phishing attempts. Seniors should be cautious about sharing personal information online and verify identities before sharing any sensitive details.
4. Online Shopping Scams: AI algorithms can create sophisticated fake websites or ads targeting seniors with fake products or services. Encourage seniors to shop only from trusted websites and verify sellers’ credentials before making purchases.
5. Healthcare and Insurance Scams: Seniors may be targeted with AI-generated emails or calls offering fake health insurance plans or medical products. Advise seniors to consult with trusted healthcare providers or family members before making any decisions.
To combat these scams, it’s crucial to educate seniors and everyone about these tactics and to encourage open communication about any suspicious interactions they may encounter. Additionally, setting up spam filters and blocking unfamiliar numbers can help reduce exposure to AI-driven scam attempts. AI technology can also duplicate voices of loved ones, so on the phone you cannot tell the difference. Create a family password, so if you ever receive a call from anyone needing help, bail, etc., ask for that password to confirm their identity.
