Companies Flourish Because of Leadership
In my coaching sessions, I often hear business owners grappling with team issues. I always ask them, how is their leadership contributing to these problems? The truth is, the success or failure of a business hinges on your leadership and the vision, purpose, and culture you instill in the team. So, if your team is struggling, the first place to look is your leadership.
Almost everything we do in life, we do as a team, from being born into a family to retiring in a community. Teams are dynamic, constantly evolving and adapting. They are filled with expectations that being a member offers distinction, growth, advancement, rewards, satisfaction, safety, competition, and self-worth, to say the least.
Being a member means you believe you bring value to the team, just as you believe others do in achieving specific team goals. When you no longer think you bring value, your expectations change, or you perceive other team members no longer bring value, you scrap and find another team more akin to your aspirations. But, when you’re on a team that’s humming, operating on all cylinders, achieving goal after goal after goal, there is no more excellent feeling of self-worth!
I’m a master parachutist, known as a jump master. This title was earned through rigorous Army training, which ended with an onerous written and hands-on skill test and several successful jumps out of military aircraft.
A successful airborne operation, where hundreds of paratroopers jump out of numerous aircraft and seize an objective, is wholly dependent on the combined efforts of everyone participating in the operation and is carefully orchestrated by the jump master: the pilots flying and loadmasters preparing the planes; the paratroopers going through rehearsals, donning parachutes then checking each other’s equipment, loading the plane; then jump masters inspecting each paratrooper for rigging and parachute flaws, determining precisely when and where the paratroopers will exit the aircraft, then issuing the appropriate commands to prepare and inspire the paratroopers to jump, assemble, advance and seize the objective! It’s teamwork at its best…your life depends on the combined efforts of everyone else participating in the operation.
Similarly, in business, leaders uncover and leverage team member strengths while mitigating weaknesses and filling capability gaps. Individual aspirations align with team values, and talents unite around a shared vision. Through coaching, leaders pave the way to organizational success by tapping into each team member’s full potential. This symbiotic relationship, orchestrated by the leader, generates focused energy towards specific goals.
The company flourishes or collapses based on the leader, so if your team isn’t humming, check your leadership first. If you want an exceptional company, develop exceptional leaders!
