Eat, Play, Love Art
Connecting with our inner child can be enjoyable at any age. Although I may no longer ride roller coasters, I still find ways to be playful and stay young at heart. I smile as the number of candles on my birthday cake increases each year. Interestingly, I don’t feel much different than I did twenty years ago. Research shows that more women than men feel psychologically younger than their actual age, a phenomenon known as subjective age. Studies suggest that a positive mindset and feeling youthful can improve brain function, enhance life quality, and even extend our lifespan.
As a teacher for the past 42 years, I’ve interacted with countless young people. I’ve enjoyed spending time with teenagers, preteens, and especially children. I appreciate their pure nature, playfulness, and fearless attitudes. I stay curious about their music, clothing, and activities. When they share their ideas and experiences, I’m flattered and grateful for the glimpse into their world. In turn, they learn about me and my generation.
Aging gracefully involves becoming more comfortable in your own skin. Authenticity leads to humility, and empathy reduces selfishness, encouraging us to share our knowledge, resources, and time with others. Getting older is a privilege, and with it comes the wisdom to make the most of each day. We learn to forgive past mistakes and focus on the present.
To enhance the quality and longevity of your life, keep your mind sharp with reading and word games, and stay physically active with exercise. Engage in activities like swimming, biking, hiking, and nature walks. Even if you’re not as agile as before, do the best you can. Embrace humor, enjoy the company of loved ones, and seek joy in plays, concerts, music, dancing, painting, and travel. As the saying goes, “We don’t stop playing because we grow older; we grow older because we stop playing.”
Always strive for personal growth and self-fulfillment. No matter your age, there’s no limit to learning new skills or hobbies. Embrace the excitement of exploration and discovery with the curiosity of a child. As Shonda Rhimes wisely said, “You can waste your life drawing lines, or you can live your life crossing them.” So, give yourself permission to color outside the lines and let your inner child thrive.
