Your Ears Need Love Too: How Hearing Loss Affects Relationships – Audiology Associates
Valentine’s Day is approaching, which means many couples are preparing for a romantic date night or a weekend getaway. Unfortunately, a number of these people have something that’s preventing them from getting the most out of their time together—untreated hearing loss.
More than 48 million Americans experience some form of hearing loss, and an estimated 80% of those people let it go untreated. In turn, this can negatively impact relationships. A study published by the American Speech and Hearing Association surveyed people with hearing loss. 35% of these participants stated that out of all their relationships, the ones with their significant other suffered the most.
It’s no secret, communication is key to any healthy relationship. Missing pieces of conversations, no matter how insignificant they may seem, can add up and ultimately have a big impact. It is common for spouses to assume that their loved one is not listening to them rather than not hearing them. This can breed confusion, frustration, and even resentment in the long run.
However, there is good news. The Better Hearing Institute has shown that the use of hearing aids can improve mental and emotional health. Hearing aids help many individuals reconnect with family and friends, reduce stress, and become a part of the conversation again. Hearing aid users have reported a 50% improvement in feelings of self-worth and a 26% improvement in mood and relationships at work.
Give your ears the gift they deserve this Valentine’s Day—healthy hearing! Regardless of what your plans are for the 14th, you should always make sure you are investing in your relationships with loved ones and a healthy future.
