Avian Influenza – Cinema Veterinary Centre
Here are a few things to know regarding Avian Influenza, also known as Bird Flu or H5N1. Avian influenza can affect any mammal including birds, cats, cows, and humans. However, it mostly affects birds (poultry and waterfowl) and cats and can be rapidly fatal in either. In birds signs may include lethargy, loss of appetite, diarrhea, coughing, nasal discharge, sneezing, neurologic signs and sudden death. Cats may exhibit signs such as lethargy, respiratory signs including open mouth breathing, coughing and sneezing, neurologic signs, blindness or liver disease. Avian influenza is spread via direct contact with contaminated surfaces or water, fecal matter, raw milk or meat. CA Veterinary Public Health should be notified immediately if a wild sick bird is found. If you have poultry or pet birds they should be protected from exposure to wild birds. Do not keep them outside. Do not allow wild birds access to your bird’s food or water sources. All healthy birds should be quarantined for at least 30 days to monitor for signs of disease before adding them to the flock. If you happen to have a sick bird or cat that needs veterinary attention, the vet staff will be wearing full PPE (personal protective equipment) which include N95 mask, gloves, safety goggles, shoe covers and fluid resistant gowns. This is to protect themselves as well as protect other veterinary patients from exposure. Any questions can be directed to Veterinary Public Health at vet@ph.lacounty.gov. Cinema Veterinary Centre is located at 23460 Cinema Drive ste L, Valencia CA 91355.
