Fun in the Sun – Copper Hill Animal Clinic
Summer can be a great time to enjoy camping, hiking and playtime outdoors, but in Santa Clarita our temperatures can be hazardous when we bring pets along. Certain breeds, such as short face (brachycephalic) dogs may be more sensitive to heat. Using proper precautions when heading out ensures a fun time rather than a trip to the vet with an overheated pet.
Pets that go outside need protection from hot weather, including plenty of water and shade. Elderly or very young pets may be more prone to overdoing it, so monitor these pets closely for increased panting and lethargic behavior.
On walks, it’s easy to forget how hot the street and sidewalk can become, even after the sun has gone down. Always test the street surface yourself with fingertips. Walking on dirt or grass may be a cooler choice. Avoiding walks during peak periods of heat is another option. Many pet canteens and specialized water bottles are available so cool water can be brought along.
Pets that spend most of the day inside are protected from many warm weather hazards, but it is important that the inside of the home remains cool. Remember to leave the A/C on at a comfortable setting. Keep multiple sources of fresh water available and consider adding ice cubes to the water as well.
