Breeding Koi: A Ketl Koi Approach
Ketl Koi prepares parent koi by feeding them with Nijikawa Koi Food and red worms. To have stable temperatures, breeding is not started until early May. A 5’x5’x2.5’ plexiglass-covered tank with 100-watt heaters is used for breeding. To help induce spawning, the tank temperature is raised to 9 degrees above the temperature of the main pond that houses the breeders.
The female is introduced to the breeding tank around 10 AM, followed by males 30-minutes later. Spawning mops and pennywort plants are used for spawning media. The spawn is usually complete by the next morning. Parent koi are removed, rinsed, and returned to the main pond. Warm fresh water is added to flush out waste products. Malachite green is added to retard fungus growth. The tank temperature is maintained between 68-71 degrees F. Eggs hatch in approximately 3 days and are free-swimming a day later. They are fed a mix of 100-micron high protein food and spirulina 4-5 times per day for 3 days.
Before moving fry from the breeding tank, a growing pond is prepared with fresh water, yeast, and chicken manure to promote algae growth as food. 8,000-9,000 fry are moved to a 10,000-gallon growing pond. Culling starts 6-8 weeks after hatching to select fry with attractive colors and patterns and eliminate those with defects. It is gratifying to raise koi for customers.
