Protecting Your Family From Water Bourne Disease Year Round – Koi and Water Garden Club
Summertime is a time for increased water use, and mosquitos need water to survive. Mosquitos will lay their eggs on standing water and will be flying adults in 1-2 weeks! By eliminating any standing water around your home, that will reduce the risk from water bourne infections. There are serious diseases that mosquitos carry and if bitten can transmit the disease into the human host including West Nile, Oropouche, Malaria, Zika, Dengue, Chikungunya and Yellow fever.
For our 4 legged family members, they also can become ill from heart worms, Equine Encephalitis and Tularemia. Scrub and rinse their water bowls weekly. Don’t forget about the bird baths too!
There are many interventions you can use around your house to protect your family and pets. The natural products to rid those pesky biters are aloe vera, citronella, vanilla, eucalyptus, tea tree oil and citrus oil. You can also plant citronella grass, basil, catnip and lavender to keep the mosquitos away, as they hate the odor produced. Other natural predators that help keep the population down are bats, dragonflies and frogs.
For those with ponds, it is essential to keep the water circulating to disrupt the egg development and always have some mosquito fish to assist with abatement. You can purchase Mosquito Bits and Dunks for the pond which can kill larvae in 24 hours but safe for your fish and wildlife.
