Valley Relics Museum Sending Saugus Speedway Scoreboard to History Center
In 2017, the scoreboard at the closed Saugus Speedway was dark, no longer needed for timed races around the legendary track. Fearing vandals might find the scoreboard before historians could preserve it, local resident Paul Alexy put together the Valley Relics Museum in Van Nuys and speedway owner Doug Bonelli to save it. A sign company, crane, and volunteers were assembled, and the scoreboard left the valley to a safer harbor.
In 2023, volunteers from the SCV Historical Society collected a few of the oversized red and white tires from the speedway’s crash wall, bringing them to the Santa Clarita History Center to begin a new exhibition on the landmark track that put us on the map. As the development of the land progressed, the Society started working with Integral Communities, then Lennar, which closed escrow on the property in early 2025.
The tires soon got some company, as the “welcome” sign, the forge from the speedway’s “hayday” as a horse track, the scales from the block house where cars and drivers were weighed, the NASCAR sign and more filled the yard behind the Society’s rolling stock.
Now, as the History Center grows its collection and influence on the cultural landscape of our valley, Alexy thought another request might be in order. He approached the Valley Relics museum board and asked if they would consider returning the Saugus Speedway scoreboard to the Santa Clarita Valley, specifically, as a donation to the collection of the SCVHS at the History Center. It was approved.
A Go Fund Me campaign has been launched to help reimburse Valley Relics Museum for the funds they spent hiring the sign company and crane back in 2017. In addition, the SCVHS must hire a company to transport and mount the scoreboard once it arrives at its forever home. With the support of racing fans in our community as well as around the Southland, the scoreboard will continue to thrill race fans for generations to come. Please help us meet this goal by contributing to the GoFundMe at https://gofund.me/1aaebe81.
