Gratitude
The holiday season has arrived, a time when our usual work pace often slows down, but our personal obligations—such as holiday shopping and celebrating Hanukkah and Christmas with loved ones—increase. Still, this period can be very stressful for leaders, especially in seasonal businesses. In the complex landscape of 2025, marked by ongoing disruption from Generative AI, global uncertainty, and a persistent hybrid work model, expressing genuine gratitude is more important than ever.
Expressing gratitude is one of a leader’s most effective tools for building and maintaining loyalty and engagement. Appreciation strengthens the emotional connection followers desire, and as a leader’s positive actions are modeled, it quickly fosters a contagious, optimistic organizational environment.
Gratitude is also a powerful tool for managing the inevitable conflicts that arise, whether from political polarization or simple project disagreements. A genuine act of kindness can disarm a confrontational person, opening the door for meaningful communication and win-win solutions.
However, being a grateful leader does not mean lowering your high standards. Instead, it involves inspiring your team to meet and uphold those standards even during tough times—such as rapid technological change or economic uncertainty—and genuinely thanking them for their efforts to accomplish them.
Sincerity is essential for gratitude, not pretense. It requires the leader to put in effort by assessing and acknowledging performance based on clear, measurable standards throughout the year. When gratitude is genuine and specific—such as praising their quick thinking for avoiding a setback—it connects more effectively with everyone.
In 2025, when trust and transparency are crucial, one of the best habits is always to start and end interactions with genuine expressions of gratitude. This can be difficult, especially when you feel wronged, disappointed, or face a perceived opponent. Nevertheless, this kindness maintains and improves your standards while supporting results-driven communication.
Ultimately, expressing gratitude should be practiced throughout the year: generous in scope, sincere in intent, and personal in delivery. Don’t wait for the holidays to recognize an outstanding achievement. Make this a regular habit, and your organizational environment will thrive!
