Tips on How to Prevent Dry Mouth While Sleeping – Kim Rosen, DDS
How to prevent dry mouth while sleeping can depend on the underlying cause. Remedies such as drinking water, using a humidifier, and chewing gum can help prevent dry mouth.
Drink Water- Dehydration can cause dry mouth or make a dry mouth worse. Staying hydrated can help improve dry mouth. However, the type of drink you use to stay hydrated matters. This is because some drinks can be acidic and further impact your dental and oral health. Avoid sodas and caffeinated drinks. Be wary of bottled water that can be acidic. Drink water that has neutral or alkaline pH.
Practice Good Oral Hygiene -Maintaining good oral hygiene is another effective way to prevent dry mouth while sleeping. This includes brushing your teeth and flossing before bed. Other ways to improve your oral hygiene and prevent dry mouth while sleeping include: brushing at least 2x a day, flossing at least once everyday, replacing your toothbrushes every 3–4 months or any time they look frayed.
Check your medications. Contact your doctor if you notice dry mouth or other new symptoms while taking a medication or supplement. They may be able to adjust your dosage or provide an alternative medication. Never stop taking medication before consulting with your doctor.
Avoid Spicy & Salty Food. Foods that are high in salt (sodium) can dry out your mouth. Spicy foods may also cause additional irritation. By avoiding these type of foods can help relieve dry mouth.
Limit or Avoid Alcohol.
Quit Smoking.
Visit a Dentist Regularly. Visiting a dentist can help you improve and protect your oral health. In turn, this can help improve or prevent dry mouth while sleeping. Contact a dentist for any symptoms affecting your teeth or mouth that are new, persistent, or improve and then return.
