Halloween is Almost Here! – VIP Veterinary
Many substances found in and around your home and yard are known to be toxic to pets. With Halloween right around the corner there are dangers to pets from toxic candy, hazardous decorations such as glow sticks and candles. Loud noises and costumed trick-or-treaters that can cause stress to your pet. To keep your pet safe always have all candy and decorations completely out of reach, please make sure you have secure indoor spaces and proper identification for you very important pet! It’s important you have your pert microchipped, collared and they have an ID tag that will make it easy for someone to contact you and safely return them home in case they escaped through an open door while you are distracted with children at your door. Do not feed your pets any Halloween candy or treats. Raisins can cause your pet’s kidneys to fail, and candy may contain substances toxic to pets, such as xylitol or chocolate!
It’s a trend that many pet owners like to dress up their pet for Halloween, it’s as high as 76 percent. We do not recommend putting costumes on your dog or cat unless you absolutely know they love it! If you do decide to dress your pet up for Halloween, make sure the costume does not limit their movement, sight and ability to bark, breathe or meow.
If you suspect your pet may have ingested a toxic substance, please contact your veterinarian. Don’t take simple signs such as vomiting for granted, and if you suspect your pet ingested any potentially toxic substance, have him checked by your veterinarian. These are but a few of the household/yard items that are harmful to your pet. All pet owners need to be vigilant and aware and keep poisonous and harmful substances out of their pet’s reach.
