April Is Too Late to Start Tax Planning – STAGGS Tax & Real Estate Advisory
As 2026 enters its final months, most taxpayers aren’t thinking about April 2027 yet. But if something unexpected changed your financial picture this year, now is the time to understand the tax consequences—not when your return is being prepared.
Good tax planning isn’t about predicting everything that will happen. It’s about recognizing when something has happened and adjusting the plan accordingly.
Did 2026 Go According to Plan?
For many business owners, investors and high-income taxpayers, the answer is no.
Perhaps you sold a business or investment, received an unexpected bonus or distribution, sold real estate, exercised stock options, acquired a new property, refinanced an investment, or received a larger-than-expected partnership distribution.
These can all be positive financial events. They can also create significant and sometimes unexpected tax liabilities.
For real estate investors in particular, an acquisition or disposition can dramatically change the year’s tax picture. Capital gains, depreciation recapture, cost segregation, bonus depreciation, 1031 exchanges, passive activity losses and partnership tax considerations can all come into play.
Waiting until tax preparation begins may mean discovering a large liability when there are few options left to address it.
Tax Planning Should Be a Conversation
Your CPA shouldn’t learn about a major transaction by seeing it on a tax document months later.
Effective year-end tax planning requires communication throughout the year. When your financial circumstances change, your tax projections should change with them.
That means revisiting estimated tax payments, evaluating available deductions, considering the timing of income and expenses, and understanding how one transaction may affect the rest of your tax situation.
For business owners, this can also mean reviewing compensation, retirement plan contributions, capital expenditures and other small business tax strategies before December 31.
For investors, it means understanding the tax consequences of transactions before they close whenever possible.
Your CPA Should Be an Advisor
There is an important difference between tax preparation and tax planning.
Tax preparation tells you what happened last year. Tax planning helps you make better decisions about what happens next.
If the only time you hear from your CPA is when it’s time to collect documents and file a return, it may be worth reconsidering whether that relationship is providing the level of advice you need.
At Staggs Advisory, we believe tax planning should be an ongoing conversation. We work with business owners, real estate investors and individuals to identify tax implications throughout the year—while there is still time to act.
April 2027 may feel far away. The decisions that determine what you owe are happening right now.
