Botox is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles and used to temporarily improve the look of both moderate to severe crow’s feet lines and frown lines between your eyebrows.
Botox blocks signals from your nerves to the muscles so that the injected muscle can no longer contract which is what causes the wrinkles to soften and relax.
It is generally used more than often, on forehead lines, crow’s feet (the lines around the eyes) and frown lines. Unfortunately wrinkles caused by sun damage and gravity will not respond to Botox… darn it!
The procedure for Botox only takes a few minutes and no anesthesia is required. You would be injected with a fine needle into specific muscles with only the slightest discomfort.
Normally, it will take three to seven days to take full effect and it is advised to avoid alcohol at least one week prior to your treatment. Also, it should be noted that aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications should also be stopped two weeks before treatment in order to reduce bruising.
As with any medication there can be side effects such as problems swallowing, speaking or breathing, allergic reactions have also been reported. It is advisable to tell your doctor about any muscle or nerve conditions. And tell your doctor about any medications you are currently on.
