Hair Is Dead

by | Dec 27, 2017 | Beauty & Bridal & Fashion

Hair is formed under the skin in a follicle but once it is visible and past the surface, it is no longer living. That means it does not hurt or bleed when it’s cut, and it cannot heal itself from chemical, heat or mechanical damage. Since hair repairs itself from damage, despite what some products claim to do, it’s important to treat your hair before it gets to the point of no return.
The life span of a single hair is about two to seven years. Think of how many washing, brushing, drying, ironing, coloring, etc., a strand of hair can go through in its lifetime! It is inevitable that there will be some degree of damage to the hair strands from coloring and heat. Even just brushing hair can weaken the hair over time.
Hair is made up of keratinized protein which is held together by hydrogen, disulfide and salt bonds which account for the hair’s strength and elasticity. Hydrogen bonds are weakened by water, and heat salt bonds are weakened by PH changes, and disulfide bonds are weakened by chemically altering the hair. The outermost layer of the hair called the cuticle takes most of the physical damage from brushing.
The key to beautiful healthy hair starts with inner health, a healthy scalp and preventative conditioning treatments. There are many salon treatments and take-home products I offer to help treat hair on a yearly, monthly, weekly and daily basis to ensure your hair looks, feels, and truly is at its best.
