Light The Night, Saving Lives One Step at a Time – Our Cover Story

This year’s Light The Night walk to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society will be on Sunday, October 14, 2007 at 5:00 p.m. at Bridgeport Park in Santa Clarita.  Volunteers, patients, survivors, families, friends and local businesses will join together for an evening of hope, the hope to find a cure for blood cancers.  Light The Night is a nationwide walk supported by walk teams and individual walkers.  Walk teams are made up of families, co-workers, schools and friends.  The biggest walk team in 2006 was a team made by students that raised over $83,000.

ImageOn September 29 and 30, 2007, the Santa Clarita Street Art Festival, sponsored by Lockheed Federal Credit Union, will highlight a spectrum of artistic talent in Old Town Newhall.  This exciting two-day festival will be located along San Fernando Road between Lyons Avenue and 5th Street.  The Street Art Festival is a free outdoor event, open to the public and features live entertainment: international dance performances, live music, fine arts and crafts, interactive activities and the fine art of street painting.

Centre Pointe Continues to Boom and Bloom

ImageCentre Pointe Business Park is the eighth existing master-planned business sector in Santa Clarita. It boasts many new companies and employs many Santa Clarita residents. This fairly new business park  is made up of approximately 242,000 square feet and is approximately 240 acres and is still growing. When completed, Centre Pointe is expected to contain more than 4.5 million square feet, 180 companies and 7,000 employees. Centre Pointe is conveniently located at Golden Valley and Soledad Canyon Roads – right in the heart of Canyon Country.  When finished, the cross-valley connector will provide easy access for people visiting Centre Pointe and those working there. Currently, the Golden Valley portion of the cross-valley connector road is open from Highway 14 past Sierra Highway and on to the new Golden Valley bridge connecting to Soledad Canyon Road. The cross-valley connector is believed to be completed by 2008.

There’s a new guy in town providing Mobile Tire Service, but not a new business.  AFX has been serving the tire and after-market wheel and accessories needs of the Santa Clarita Valley since 1999.  New owner, Laurent Feuerhelm, worked along-side previous owner Greg Spinrad for five years.  When Mr. Spinrad moved into another arena of tire services, Laurent jumped at the opportunity to continue the business.

ImageThe Betty Ferguson Foundation (BFF) established their Education Advancement Forum with College of the Canyons (COC) in 2005.  Through this forum, they donate some of the foundation’s funds, gained through their two annual fund-raising events, to help students of all ages pursue their educational goals.  To date, they have already given $30,000 towards their $100,000 endowment.

Does your teen cry out to be trusted, loved as well as feel safe and secure?  Do they have a purpose and long to be heard, valued and supported?  Based on a customized survey developed by Tim Smith and George Gallup, our teens, the “millennials” say these are their seven greatest needs.  These seven cries of today’s teens will be the focus of the 7th Annual Teen Scene Unplugged, scheduled for Tuesday, September 18, at the Hyatt Valencia.  A very popular event offered by the city of Santa Clarita and the Blue Ribbon Task Force, Teen Scene Unplugged draws over 500 parents, teens and community members every year.

ImageIf children are the future, then the children of the Youth in Government summer program are the future of Santa Clarita.  On Tuesday, July 10, a celebration luncheon hosted by the City of Santa Clarita and Mayor Marsha McLean marked the culmination of the Youth in Government Summer Internship Program.  The luncheon celebrated the 14 high school students who participated in this program designed to teach young people about local government structures, the tools of leadership and the process of public policy.
