Did you know that looking at beautiful works of art and listening to music may contribute to better health?  Being a co-owner of an art gallery for 27 years and also a musician for 43, I see how art and music have enhanced my life and contributed to my health.

It was a great joint Zonta and Soroptimist meeting this year as local members of the two organizations joined for their yearly meeting.  Hosted by Zonta Club of Santa Clarita Valley, the highlighted speakers for the evening were Julie Mairs, President of Los Angeles Soroptimist Club and Dianne Curtis, local Zontian and Zonta International Vice-President.

With the opening of SCV Cleaners, Albert Naber is returning to his roots.  The Santa Clarita resident was trained as a tailor and earned his degree in Rome, but for 25 years he has spent more time with cars than clothes.  Together with his wife Antoinette, Albert turned Canyon Country’s Water Wheel Car Wash into a neighborhood institution.

Offered by Zonta, The Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship is available to young women who are interested in pursuing a career in business.  Women who are eligible to enter their third or fourth year of an undergraduate degree program are encouraged to pursue careers and seek leadership positions in business-related fields in their communities and throughout the world. 

The holidays are over and we at the SCV Newhall Optimist Club hope you and yours had happy ones.  Our wishes for the New Year are ones of health, happiness and peace for all mankind.  Our thanks and gratitude go out to all those in the community that helped make our annual food and toy drive a success.

My wife Barbara and I have owned B&R Gallery for 25 years now, and over this time, a number of families, groups and organizations, including college classes, Boy Scout troops, and grade school classes as well as individual art students and art collectors have visited us to become educated on the artists we represent and to enjoy the ambiance of our gallery and custom framing facilities.

The hands-free law goes into effect on July 1st of this year, which means while you’re driving, you must be “hands-free” using your cell phone.  Hands-free means using a wired earpiece, the speakerphone on your cell phone or your car, if equipped, or the most popular, a Bluetooth earpiece.  A Bluetooth earpiece is a short-range (usually not more than 30 feet) wireless connection to your cell phone.

To capitalize on a millionaire’s dream of eliminating hunger through grassroots involvement, the Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry invited local schools to team up for the “4th Annual Students Against Hunger in the SCV — Spring Food Drive 2008.”  The winning school will receive an award certificate from the SCV Food Pantry.

Now in its 25th year of service to the Santa Clarita Valley, the area’s premier Domestic Violence Center agency has a new tool in the recovery toolbox for kids, art!  Three new “teaching tools” are actually a set of new custom murals that now adorn the walls of the center’s back office area.
