Even though there is no specific age to start treatment, it is recommended that a child see an orthodontist as early as seven years of age.  There are no strict guidelines on what can be corrected at that age but typically problems such as: cross-bites (or narrow jaws), under-bites (lower jaw being ahead of upper jaw), flared upper front teeth (that are at great risk for trauma), severe crowding, harmful habits (such as thumb or finger sucking), open bites (front teeth not coming together), missing teeth and impacted teeth are typical conditions that need to be treated at an early age. 

When 10-year-old Jesse came to SDFHC, his weight was well past the normal range for a child of his age. In talking with his mother, Jesse’s health care provider uncovered some of the factors leading to his weight problem: a diet largely consisting of fast food, a sedentary lifestyle. Through nutritional counseling, Jesse as well as the rest of his family members are on their way to gradually establishing healthier eating and living habits. 

Many patients tell me they would love to have whiter teeth, however in the past, after a whitening procedure they experienced quite a bit of tooth sensitivity, which is the main reason why whitening is no longer an option for them.  The question then: “Is there a way to get whiter teeth without the sensitivity?”

The Cause of Back Pain
The discs in your spine provide space between each vertebrae and act as shock absorbers to give you the ability to bend and twist.  These shock absorbers undergo a significant amount of stress.  When the stress in the disc gets to high it begins to fail.  These failures are often called herniated discs and degenerative disc disease.  These changes often pinch or irritate the nerves ultimately causing pain.

Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital volunteer Estelle Hoffman was installed as the hospital’s 2010 Auxiliary president in front of an enthusiastic group of board members and volunteers during a luncheon on Friday, January 8.
The Auxiliary is an organization of hospital volunteers who support Henry Mayo with their participation in various fundraising events as well as the management of the hospital gift shop.
