With Your Family in Mind

Every child deserves to have a safe, loving and permanent home.  Children’s Bureau needs foster families who will care specifically for infants and toddlers during the reunification process with their parents.  There are also 114,000 children currently in foster care who are unable to return to their families of origin.  Children’s Bureau is seeking caring families to consider adopting these older children and large sibling sets.  The agency is holding a monthly information meeting for those interested in learning more on Saturday, January 26 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the Community Room at the Westfield Valencia Town Center.

Public Safety Programs include child welfare, foster care and adoptions, juvenile justice, and mental health services.  Funding children’s programs is necessary to help vulnerable children receive help that otherwise put them at serious risk for abuse, exploitation, criminal activities, and other dangerous circumstances that impede their development.

No matter which holiday you celebrate during this winter season, the holidays are traditionally a time for family and friends, sharing joy, good tidings, warmth and lots and lots of delicious, fattening food.  For many of our seniors, who live alone or in a facility and have no family living in close proximity, however, this time of year can be devastatingly lonely and filled with feelings of disappointment, isolation and depression.

It seems like only yesterday we were putting away the decorations and making New Year’s resolutions.  Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukah, Kwanzaa or any other big holiday, the pressure of the season seems magnified compared to other times of the year.

Adult education in California began in 1856 during the early years of statehood in the basement of St. Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco.  Then, as now, many adult students were immigrants, learning to speak English and studying subjects as varied as drafting, bookkeeping, and elementary academics.

A power of attorney and a health care proxy are essential parts of a good estate plan.  A power of attorney appoints an agent to make financial deci­sions for you if you become incapacitated.  A health care proxy appoints an agent to make medical deci­sions for you if you can’t make them yourself.  The easiest - and in some ways, best - idea is to name one person as your agent for all purposes.

As of September 2012, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled “en banc” in a vote of 6-5 that immigration officials must prioritize thousands of green card applicants who “lost their place in line” (figuratively speaking) when they turned 21.  It used to be that once you turned 21 after waiting a lifetime for your parents’ visa to become available, you were just out of luck and could not immigrate with your parents.  Everyone agreed that punishing people who had been patiently waiting in line to get their turn only to be told “tough luck” was just too callous a treatment, although it still goes on in other federal circuits.

FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is the application to determine eligibility for federal, state, and college-sponsored financial aid, including grants, educational loans, and work-study programs used by most colleges and by the Department of Education to determine your EFC (Expected Family Contribution).

In a Chapter 7 bankruptcy case, the primary objective for debtors is to discharge unsecured debt.  For most debtors, some or all of their unsecured debts occurred long before they decided to file bankruptcy.  With few exceptions, those debts should not pose a problem in the bankruptcy and should be discharged.  Examples include old credit card debt, medical bills, personal loans taken out years ago, and old utility bills.

Only if the remarriage is legally valid!  In Marriage of Left, 208 Cal.App 4th 1137, 146, Mr. Left married Andrea Left in June 2001 but the marriage and Andrea filed for divorce by 2005.  As part of their settlement agreement, Mr. Left was to pay $14,590 a month for child support and $32,547 for spousal support.  The court entered a judgment as to marital status on June 3, 2008, but reserved jurisdiction over the remaining issues.

Breast cancer patients in the Santa Clarita Valley will have a new way to cope with post-surgery discomfort, now that Zonta Club of the Santa Clarita Valley has started delivery of its Huggy Heartz therapeutic pillows for distribution to local women.
The pillows, made of soft washable cotton in cheerful patterns, have a strap to be worn over the shoulder.  The heart-shaped pillow has a pouch on one side to hold a cold pack under the arm, where it will be most comfortable for patients.
