Protect Against Cancer Food as Medicine
Cancer results from an imbalance in the body’s immune system where it cannot fight off tumors. There are many things a person can do to prevent cancer from getting to its full stage, and possibly making the body inhospitable to that cancer. Certain foods actually contribute to the development of cancer while other foods reduce the risk. Research studies consistently show that individuals with a high intake of certain foods and nutritional supplements are significantly less likely to develop specific types of cancer. For people with a genetic tendency toward cancer, it is not just an option, it can be lifesaving.
The best way to prevent or control cancer is to minimize or eliminate sugary, processed foods and control insulin levels with a real, fresh, whole foods, and high-fiber diet. One study showed how a three-month intensive lifestyle program, including a whole-foods plant-based diet, over 500 genes that regulate cancer were positively affected, either turning off the cancer-causing genes or turning on the cancer-protective genes. Medications do not have this kind of healing power!
A food plan high in phytonutrients (colorful fruits and vegetables) reduces the risk of all types of cancers. Plants contain phytochemicals, substances that may help the body fight cancer. Powerful antioxidants A, B-complex, C, E and the carotenoids destroy free radicals. A high intake of tomato products (high in carotenoids) can reduce the risk for cancer; especially of the prostate, lung, and stomach. Cruciferous vegetables–which include broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts and kale–have been associated with lowered cancer risk, especially of the stomach, colon, and breast. Certain supplements, especially curcumin and vitamin D, have shown to be helpful through various anti-cancer mechanisms.
There are several strategies to combat and prevent cancer, including adequate sleep, a friendly stress level, and regular movement. This also includes eliminating common food sensitivities such as gluten and dairy, reduce inflammation by eating omega-rich foods, improve gut health with prebiotic and probiotics, reduce toxic exposure by becoming more aware about how environmental toxins affect our health, and most importantly choosing a mindful life by changing our thoughts – positive emotions can transform us and improve our overall health.
