The Benefits of Glycolic Acid
Glycolic acid is what is known as “alpha hydroxy acid”. Alpha Hydroxy acids or “AHAs” are a family of acids that occur naturally in various fruits and foods. Glycolic acid, found in sugar cane, is the AHA that has received the most attention medically because of all the AHAs, it has the smallest molecule. This small molecule size enables glycolic acid to penetrate the skin more effectively and to bring about the most dramatic and beneficial changes of all the AHAs, often collectively referred to as fruit acids.
Among other things, glycolic acid loosens the glue like attachments or cellular cement that are characteristic of many skin conditions such as acne, photo damage (environmental aging) and hyperpigmentation. This non-invasive lifting of cells in the top layers of the epidermis enables glycolic acid to act as a phenomenal resurfacing agent that can immensely improve the appearance of the skin. It has even proven to be a valuable tool in reducing the depth of acne scarring.
As physicians and researchers have developed a greater interest in glycolic acid, medical studies have revealed that glycolic acid stimulates collagen, increases epidermal volume and even acts as a powerful antioxidant and free radical inhibitor. Tests also illustrate how glycolic acid acts as a delivery agent when combined with other beneficial ingredients such as kojic acid and azelaic acid.
Medical studies demonstrate that higher strengths of glycolic acid (peels), along with consistent use of glycolic acid home care products can make a dramatic improvement in the appearance of the skin. Additionally, hand and body products containing glycolic acid are gaining in popularity as people find they provide the same benefits as those used in facial care.
