Build Self-Esteem and Confidence in the Performing Arts!
It is a fact that children attending classes or lessons in the Performing Arts maintain better academic results. Additionally, participation in the Performing Arts builds self-esteem and confidence which are valuable tools needed to face challenges of life. Whether children pursue careers in the performing arts or participate just for fun, tools learned among others can be used throughout their lives. A warm, supportive environment is essential as children grow to discover their full potential through creative expression. Regardless of abilities, performing arts educators must strive to build a positive influence. The goal should be to help each student develop discipline, build self-esteem and confidence, and help define each student’s individual character. Sure, setbacks can happen. But how children are taught to work through these setbacks is what makes the difference!
Self-esteem and confidence is a child’s passport to a life of mental health and social happiness. It’s the foundation of a child’s well-being and the key to success as an adult. At all ages, how you feel about yourself affects how you act. While self-esteem and confidence are important in nearly every aspect of our lives, many lack these tools. As a result, some adults find it difficult to conduct themselves well in job interviews, speak in front of a group, or deal with relationship issues. With proper training, students develop a love for the arts and build self-esteem and confidence that will be rewarding.
After a singer performs in group classes I instruct, positive feedback from the class is solicited. Constructive criticism is essential for improvement, but most focus on what is wrong and not what is right. A good exercise is to video your performance. Review it and instead of looking for things that need to improve, focus on looking for areas that were positive. This is not easy to do but if positive aspects of your performance are sought after, most feel encouraged (even beginners)! If self-esteem is fostered, confidence improves and overall improvement is inevitable.
Why not work to build these tools in your children’s lives? The success of education depends upon cooperation between teacher, student, and parent. VIBE Performing Arts endeavors to help all students experience excitement and dedication necessary to help them succeed in life as well as on stage.
