A Very Bright Light

by | May 25, 2018 | Pet Services

We recently rescued a cow and her baby boy just in time for Mother’s Day. The mom, Rosita was at a Los Angeles slaughter house and gave birth to her son there. Sadly, cows are sent to slaughter pregnant every day, but most do not live to tell about it. In a miraculous act of compassion, the slaughter house owner allowed us to have both mom and baby to live out their lives at The Gentle Barn.
The baby, Eugene is innocent and full of life, blissfully unaware of what almost befell them. He spends most of the day nursing and napping. In the cooler evenings he gallops, jumps, and plays in the barn. It will take a while for Rosita to recover from her trauma and learn to trust people. But we have staff and volunteers meditating, reading, and singing to them every day, and her face is already much softer.
Rosita was named in honor of Christian Serratos’ character on the show, The Walking Dead. The character Rosita is known for her strength, perseverance, protection of others, and her strong will to live. The baby was named Eugene for the little boy on the show that Rosita protects and takes care of. Christian Serratos shared the rescue and story to millions of fans and opened many hearts to the plight of farm animals, for which we are very grateful.
The Gentle Barn is located in Santa Clarita and is home to animals rescued from neglect and abuse, and host to school field trips, private tours, and groups of children with special needs. The Gentle Barn is open to the public on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more info, tickets, and directions, go to www.gentlebarn.org
