The Problem with Weight Loss Challenges
So, you haven’t worked out in quite some time and you’ve put on a few too many pounds. You’ve had enough and you’re ready to do something about it. Like many Americans you decide to do a challenge to get your started on your weight loss journey.
In no secret that weight loss challenges have been all the rage for quite some time now. From weight loss challenges at local gyms to online challenges advertised on social media to the Biggest Loser on television you see them popping up everywhere. Many people have found these challenges to be a fun and effective way to lose weight. A few hard working and lucky people have not only lost weight but also won cash and prizes! Losing weight and winning money seems like a win-win so what’s the problem?
The problem is that an overwhelming percentage of weight loss challenge contestants end up putting all of if not more of the weight they lost back on. In fact, most of the contestants on the Biggest Loser television show ended up putting most of the weight they lost back on. So why does this happen? There are several reasons why this happens but they main reason is extreme weight loss just isn’t sustainable. Crash diets almost always fail because people eventually go back to their old eating habits. When it comes to permanent weight loss what matters most is sustainable weight loss techniques. The longer you can stick with a diet and workout routine the more likely you are to lose weight and to keep it off.
However, you can still do weight loss challenges as long as what you’re doing is safe and as long as you transition to a more sustainable diet after. The idea is to initially drop weight quickly and then transition to a slower weight loss phase and or a healthy weight maintenance phase. Here at Survival of the Fittest we are focused on teaching our clients how to make healthy lifestyle choices and that’s why we do our challenges different than most gyms. It’s fairly easy to drop a bunch of weight quickly. The hard part is keeping it off.
